Amazon Now scales up to 500 dark stores in India push

Amazon is scaling its quick commerce arm Amazon Now aggressively, running more than 500 dark stores and about 4.5 lakh to 5 lakh daily orders, as it tries to close the wide gap with market leader Blinkit in India's fast delivery race.

The signal
  • Amazon Now is running more than 500 dark stores across India
  • The service is clocking roughly 4.5 lakh to 5 lakh daily orders
  • It uses a leaner model leaning on startup run dark stores and third party logistics
  • Blinkit still leads with about 30 lakh daily orders, ahead of Zepto at 24 to 25 lakh

A leaner late entrant

Amazon is pushing harder into instant delivery through Amazon Now, which is now operating more than 500 dark stores and processing about 4.5 lakh to 5 lakh orders a day, according to Ascendants. Rather than build the entire network itself, the company is using a leaner model that leans partly on startup operated dark stores and third party logistics providers, letting it add capacity faster and with lower fixed cost.

The scale up matters less for its current size than for who is behind it. Amazon can plug quick commerce into an existing base of loyal shoppers, Prime members and payment and advertising infrastructure, giving it room to grow even from a late start. The report framed Amazon Now as a credible emerging challenger rather than an immediate threat to the leaders.

Still far behind the leaders

The gap remains large. Blinkit is delivering around 30 lakh orders a day, with Zepto at roughly 24 lakh to 25 lakh, so Amazon Now’s daily volumes are still a fraction of the front runners. Closing that distance will require deeper city coverage and faster fulfilment, areas where Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart have spent heavily to build density.

Why it matters for Indian brands: a serious Amazon entry adds a fifth well funded buyer to the quick commerce shelf, which can improve terms and reach for sellers but also splinters demand across more apps. Brands will need channel specific pricing and assortment as the platform war widens.
