AI search cuts Shiksha billings 22.8% in Q1 FY27

A real Indian business just put a number on AI search. Info Edge's education unit lost 22.8% of billings while every other unit grew.

The signal
  • Shiksha billings fell 22.8% year on year to Rs 35 crore in Q1 FY27; the headline rounds this to 23%.
  • Shiksha revenue fell 11.9% to Rs 44 crore, operating PBT fell 48.8% to Rs 3 crore, and operating cash flow was negative Rs 7 crore.
  • Info Edge consolidated revenue rose 11% to Rs 881 crore and profit rose 43% to Rs 490 crore.
  • Naukri grew 12% to Rs 629 crore and 99acres rose to Rs 130 crore from Rs 111 crore, while Shiksha is about 5% of operating revenue.

Shiksha, Info Edge’s education platform, saw billings fall 22.8% year on year to Rs 35 crore in Q1 FY27. Revenue declined 11.9% to Rs 44 crore. Operating profit before tax fell 48.8% to Rs 3 crore, and operating cash flow was negative Rs 7 crore. The company attributed the slowdown partly to changes in Google search driven by the rise of AI. The Entrackr headline rounds the billings fall to 23%; the reported figure is 22.8%.

The damage sits in one unit. Info Edge’s consolidated Q1 FY27 revenue was Rs 881 crore, up 11%, with profit up 43% to Rs 490 crore. Naukri, the recruitment business, grew 12% to Rs 629 crore. 99acres rose to Rs 130 crore from Rs 111 crore. Jeevansathi contributed Rs 38 crore and Aisle Rs 12 crore. Shiksha is around 5% of total operating revenue. No named executive is quoted in the report; the AI commentary is company disclosure around the Q1 results.

Read the two Shiksha numbers together. Billings fell 22.8% while revenue fell 11.9%. Billings are booked before revenue is recognised, so the revenue line lags and understates what has already happened at the top of the funnel. Operating PBT falling 48.8% on an 11.9% revenue drop is operating leverage running in reverse. Content and counselling cost stays put when the traffic that monetises it does not.

The useful distinction is what Shiksha is versus what Naukri is. Shiksha acquires through content that answers a question, and an AI answer can serve that question without the click. Naukri, 99acres and Jeevansathi run on logged in intent and transactions, which a summary cannot complete for the user. Sort your own pages into those two buckets before assuming a blended traffic number tells you anything.

Three things to instrument this month. Split Search Console impressions from clicks by page and watch for impressions holding while clicks fall, which is the signature of an answer being read without a visit. Track new bookings or pipeline rather than recognised revenue, because the fall shows up there first. Shift budget toward pages that need an account, a quote or a calculation to be useful, since those resist summarisation. Shiksha’s own answer is more student content and a stronger domestic counselling business, which is a bet that depth still earns the click.
