Bernstein warns metros now hold 700 too many dark stores

Nearly 900 new dark stores in a quarter went almost entirely into already-served pincodes, pushing metros past profitable capacity.

The signal
  • Five players added close to 900 dark stores in the quarter, taking the network to roughly 6,500.
  • Unique serviceable pincodes rose only about 150, so nearly 9 in 10 new stores hit existing areas.
  • Bernstein pegs metro capacity at about 3,600 stores against roughly 4,300 now operating.
  • Expect compressed per-store throughput, harder ad monetisation and eventual metro consolidation.

India’s five biggest quick commerce players added close to 900 dark stores between April and June, taking the national network to roughly 6,500 outlets. But a Bernstein analysis flagged on 25 July argues the growth is turning into overcapacity in the places that matter most.

The tell is in the pincodes. Despite the 900 new stores, the number of unique serviceable pincodes rose by only about 150 to 2,722. That means nearly nine in ten new dark stores opened in areas that already had quick commerce, not in fresh territory. Operators are stacking capacity into existing demand, not widening the map.

Metros are where it bites. Bernstein estimates cities now host about 4,300 dark stores against a profitable capacity of roughly 3,600, an overhang of some 700 outlets. The share of metro pincodes where all five players operate jumped from 26 percent in April to 44 percent in July, so the same shoppers are being fought over by more stores.

The brokerage’s conclusion is that metro consolidation may be needed before profitability improves, with the next real growth sitting in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. For brands, the operator read is that per-store throughput in saturated metros will compress, platforms will lean harder on ad monetisation and trade margins, and slot availability may loosen as networks rationalise capacity.
