MS Dhoni joins SolarSquare $53 Mn Series C as brand ambassador

Former India captain MS Dhoni has put money into SolarSquare and signed on as its face, tying a celebrity endorsement to the residential rooftop solar brand's $53 million round.

The signal
  • Dhoni invested through his family office Midas Deals and will front the brand
  • The $53 Mn Series C drew Lightspeed, Lowercarbon Capital, NGP Capital and Elevation
  • SolarSquare has installed in 50,000-plus homes across 29 cities
  • Capital funds an expansion into 30 to 40 new cities plus financing and service

SolarSquare has added a marketing headline to its balance sheet. Former India captain MS Dhoni has invested in the residential rooftop solar brand through his family office Midas Deals and will join as brand ambassador, the company said on 21 July. The cheque is part of SolarSquare’s $53 million Series C, a round that also drew Lightspeed, Lowercarbon Capital, NGP Capital and Elevation Capital.

Founded by Shreya Mishra and Nikhil Nahar, SolarSquare says it has installed solar systems in more than 50,000 homes across 29 cities. The fresh capital is earmarked for entering 30 to 40 new cities, upgrading its technology platform, widening consumer financing options and strengthening after-sales service, the three areas where rooftop solar adoption usually stalls.

Why it matters

Rooftop solar is a high-ticket, trust-led purchase where a household commits years of savings on a single install. That makes it closer to a considered D2C category than an impulse buy, and it explains the Dhoni signing. A recognisable, credibility-heavy face lowers the perceived risk of a large payment to a young brand, the same logic operators use when they pair a celebrity with warranties and financing at the point of sale. The read for consumer founders is that endorsement spend and distribution economics have to move together. A brand ambassador buys attention, but conversion in categories like this still hinges on financing, installation reliability and service, which is exactly where SolarSquare is pointing the new money.
